Local beer & wine festivals
Here’s an incomplete list of beer and drink festivals in Southport, Ormskirk and districts in 2009
This will be updated as more information become available. If you know of any festivals taking place, email me HERE
March-April
Wetherspoons/Lloys No1 International beer festival
All beers priced are priced from £1.49 to £1.59 a pint, but there’s no knowing in what condition they will be served in Southport’s two outlets.
The overseas beers on sale are Epic Pale Ale (New Zealand), Yukon Lead Dog Ale (Canada), Barons Bush Berry Porter (Australia), Sinebrychoff (Finland), Bend Brewing Blue Yonder (USA), Flying Dutchman Witbier (Holland), Palm Steenbrugge Blond (Belgium) and St Georgenbrau Keller Bier (Germany).
The UK beers include Raspberry Fool (Caledonian), Nosey Parker (Robinsons), Silver Adder (Mauldons), Cornish Mutiny (Wooden Hand), Sting in the Tail (Arundel), Hunny Trap (Skinners), Spin Doctor (Hydes), Cooper’s Butt (Theakston) and Hopping Mad (J.W. Lees).
May
Baron’s Bar May Festival The 1st of May is the big one at the Baron’s Bar, Scarisbrick Hotel, Southport. A 6am start is now traditional with folk dancers from the Southport Swords dancing round the town’s ‘May-pole’ before coming in for beer and bacon butties. Really becoming a town tradition with more people taking part each year. Usually lasts for two weeks
The Southport Food and Drink Festival returns with several events in the town, including beer and wine tasting courses. The 3rd annual Southport Food and Drink festival. I’ve never got excited by this one, but maybe there’ll be more to it this year.
July
Southport Wine Fest DATE TBC
The Floral Hall in Southport will play host to gallons of wine tasting and glugging, with plenty of good food and entertainment. This event has been organised by Dave Smith of Portland Wine Cellars so the quality will be top notch.
September
The Sandgrounder (CAMRA) beer festival at the Southport Arts Centre Date TBC
A brilliant three-day beer-drinkers dream of event in the arts centre. Hundreds of beers, ciders and perries.
October
Autumn festival at the Baron’s bar. A smaller, long weekend of an affair usually around Halloween
November 27
Lancashire Day, lots of pubs offering special Lancashire beer promotions.
SIBA North – a boozer’s dream, more than 100 beers all in top condition vying for prizes at the Scarisbrick Hotel. Representatives from the breweries last time out, 104 firkins of beer sold in 15 days
Odd days
The Baron’s bar now also mark the saints days of the British Isles, very popular, especially St George and St Patrick. The last St David’s day had a Welsh exile with tears in his etyes to see the bar decked out with daffodils, Welsh cakes to eat and a vast selection of Welsh beers on offer
