The good folk of Layton on the Fylde are fighting to save the historic Windmill pub from being flattened and turned into a Tesco.
Quite how it got this far is anyone’s guess, but it’s great see see a working class community standing up to bullies like this.

Tesco eyes Layton’s Windmill
August 9, 2009Are Government being sneaky over minimum pricing?
March 15, 2009According to The Times, the Government will not be taking up the advice of its chief medical officer and putting a minimum price of 50p on each unit of alcohol we buy.
New Labour has a habit of sneaking out something big, saying they’ve gone cool on it to stifle opposition and then bringing it in [...]
Down with trendy beer
May 13, 2008Call me a grump, but I’ve worried about the effect marketing is having on our beloved pints.
I say this after drinking a bottle of Seven Giraffes Extraordinary Ale (5.1%), brewed by the Williams Bros Brothers Co of bonny Scotland and bought because I liked the look of the label.
The beer, which had lots of lemon [...]
Tramps face tough decision
February 26, 2008In yet another cynical, empty gesture, big store off-licences in London have banned the sale of superstrength lagers like Carlsberg Special Brew.
Big Smoke tramps, who are usually unwelcome at stores like Tesco and Waitrose anyway, are now weighing up their options. Should they emulate their American cousins and take up sweet wine, join their Russian [...]
Prince injured in war against drinking
February 14, 2008The neo-prohibitionists and Government spinners have launched a furious onslaught in the war against drinking.
Just when you thought it was safe to open a newspaper, today’s press is filled with binge-drinking scare stories painting a picture of Britian in the grip of drunken orgy of violence that can only be quashed by cannons of new [...]
Another round of Holt’s
December 18, 2007My blog of a couple of weeks ago slaughtering Joseph Holt beers has come back to haunt me.
Since then I’ve had to fend off phone calls and posts on my blog from drinkers determined to defend the honour of the Manchester brewery.
Also, according to one good source, I have been declared barred from all Joseph [...]
The godfather of binge drinking
December 6, 2007I’ve always hated Tesco. But now that MPs have branded big chief Terry Leahy “the godfather of British binge-drinking” I feel a certain admiration for them.
As much as I love and cherish pubs, forcing the price of drinks up in supermarkets will only be a victory for prohibitionists in the bloody war against drinking.
MP John [...]
Is nookie next, Dr Ruth?
November 4, 2007More anti-pub legislation’s on the way if we are to listen to this brazen Hussey.
Dr Ruth Hussey, director of public health for north-west England, says we are ”surrounded” by licensed venues, which seduce us into a drinking lifestyle. To combat this public menace, sthe good doctor wants to make it harder to open new pubs.
There’s nothing like the [...]
