New beer and music club for Liverpool

November 10, 2009

This looks like paradise – opening on November 12 is The Contemporary Urban Centre at the junction of Jamaica, Greenland and Parliament Streets, close to Liverpool’s city centre.
The jewel in the new venue’s crown is the Beer House basement, with live jazz and acoustic music two nights a week with a beer menu to die [...]

Doggie Style at the Manx Milfster meeting place

July 26, 2009

A warm summer’s evening, so where better than the convinial courtyard of Rigbys in Liverpool, the real ale bar that’s bursting with MILFs – surely the only one of its kind in the city.
Chatting to old comrade Seany Sean, the SD didn’t even mind laying down £3.50 a pint for draft Budvar, a rariety in [...]

Another vote for the Vernon – no love for the BNP

June 9, 2009

With Tandleman and Rednev raving about the reopened Vernon in Liverpool, I had to give it a go. All the rumours are true, it’s a fantastic revival of a much-loved pub.

All the original features are still there as far as I can see, including the lovely round mirror in the back room. This was the [...]

Lights out in Liverpool

January 25, 2009

There was an eerie, exhilarating feeling in Liverpool last night, a large part of the city was in darkness following a power cut. The Anglican cathedral was lit up and tolling its bells, guiding the people as they stumbled down the pitch-black streets in search of refreshment.
Out with Mr Barbar and Kenzie, we found the [...]

Liverpool pubs looking healthy

January 11, 2009

As Liverpool’s Capital of Culture year ended yesterday, it is good to see that the city’s booze culture is staying strong.
According to the weekend Echo, there are currently 948 pubs and bars in the Liverpool. 12 venues closed but another 15 opened during 2008, compared to other areas where around 36 licensed premises shut every week.
The Camra [...]

Cheaper cider on the way?

October 11, 2008

Just when I get the taste for cider, a record crop has been announced which should (and I say should) see cheaper prices for the product.
Funnily enough, sales of Magners have slumped amid competition from other brands and changing fashions. If you are drinking cider, it’s worth seeking out the real stuff as opposed to the likes of anything [...]

Will beer crash?

September 17, 2008

Filled with despair, I jumped into the (soon to be repossessed) car and drove for the beach with the idea of driving into the sea and not stopping until I joined Frodo and Igglepiggle in the Western lands.
I abandoned the plan when confronted with the monstrous £3 charge to park on the sands and a [...]

Cain’s on brink of closure

July 28, 2008

Cain’s Brewery of Liverpool could close, reports the BBC.
The news, which is a dagger in the heart to its many fans and the 1,000+ workforce, follows notices in the local and national press that (general downtown aside) they were one of the fastest growing breweries in the country with a £30m annual turnover.
However, according to [...]

This is what they want

June 27, 2008

Tandleman wasn’t that impressed on a recent visit, but Liverpool’s little Ship and Mitre pub continues to pull in ale lovers.
A sign above the bar on Thursday read, “last week we sold 2,316 pints of real ale” — and I wasn’t even near the place. A three-day German bottled beer festival saw 2,500 bottles sold and [...]

Government targets Liverpool drinkers

June 10, 2008

The Government is to spend millions of pounds sending a team of anti-alcohol “experts” into Liverpool after the Department of Health branded the great city the booze capital of Britain.
The Liverpool Daily Post, which seems to swallow anything these days, has printed a press release about the worrying news here. The Post goes on to [...]
