Baron’s Bar beer festival

May 2, 2009

There’s loads of great booze but hardly room to stand at the Baron’s, which began its 11-day beer festival yesterday.
Elsewhere the hated Southport Food And Drink Festival will shortly be upon us (May 14-17) with some booze related events.
Edward Theakston of the brewers will be coming on May 14 to answer questions from drinkers. Can’t [...]

Moorhouse’s laugh at credit crunch

January 3, 2009

Moorhouse’s - maker of top cask beers like Pendle Witch – is keeping a clear head amid the economic gloom and investing in booze.
The Burnley brewery is starting work next week on a £3.5 complex  that will triple capacity to 900 barrels a week and create dozens of new jobs.
Moorhouse’s ales are always available at the [...]

Cheaper cider on the way?

October 11, 2008

Just when I get the taste for cider, a record crop has been announced which should (and I say should) see cheaper prices for the product.
Funnily enough, sales of Magners have slumped amid competition from other brands and changing fashions. If you are drinking cider, it’s worth seeking out the real stuff as opposed to the likes of anything [...]

Cocktail hours

July 15, 2008

Following my post about the difficulty in tracking down a Bloody Mary, I finally secured one at Maloney’s bar in the Scarisbrick Hotel.
I’ve undervalued Maloney’s in the past, tending to tip up there worse for wear in the early hours when all watering holes look the same.
My barman not only made me a first-class Bloody [...]

Rich list at the Scarisbrick

July 14, 2008

The Scarisbrick Hotel on Lord Street is hoping to attract rich visitors to Southport during the Open golf by offering eight varieties of pink and white champagne and cognacs costing up to £55 a shot.
“The Louis XIII de Remy Martin cognac is our most expensive spirit at £55 – and that’s for [...]

The 19th hole

July 11, 2008

The Open championship starts at Royal Birkdale on Thursday – but while the likes of George Clooney will be living it up in the VIP bar, the average golf fan faces a bit of a walk for refreshment after the swinging’s over.
The only pub within walking distance is the Crown on Liverpool Road, Birkdale (not to be [...]

Festival week

May 10, 2008

The Baron’s four-week beer festival continues its impressive way with a quiz night tomorrow (Sunday, May 11) at 9pm.
This week is all about beers from Merseyside, with brews from the Southport Brewery, Cain’s, the George Wright Brewery of Rainford and, most intriguingly of all, Higson’s – a Bootle-brewed version of the much loved Liverpool ale that [...]

Baron’s beers selling fast

May 7, 2008

The Baron’s Bar beer festival is proving a runaway success.
The plan is to have four separatly themed weeks, but beer has been selling so fast that boss man George Sourbutts had to start the second week early and draft in extra beers from nearby breweries.
Last night was for Camra members, with pints of the good [...]

Camra beer night

May 5, 2008

The Baron’s bar is offering all real ales at £1.50 a pint tomorrow (Tuesday May 6) to all members of Camra who can search through their kitchen drawers and find a valid membership card.
That’s a choice of 11 beer-festival beers served in peak condition for £1.50 a freakin pint. Amazing value in these cut-throat days.
I’d [...]

6am start for Baron’s beer festival

April 30, 2008

The Baron’s Bar four-week beer festival starts tomorrow, May 1, at 6am with beer, bacon butties and folk dancing round the town’s ‘maypole’.
There’s live music from 9pm with vocalist Paula Delaney, but the reason to be there is quality ales such as Caingorm’s Tradewinds (national beer comp winner 2008 ) and Howard Town’s Wren’s Nest.
They’ve [...]
