Punk pub to be yuppie flats
Legendary punk pub The Royal Oak in Poulton has been sold and is to become luxury flats.
The pub was one of the few on the NW coast keeping a local punk scene alive, especially among younger types, and offered thirsty rockers pints and doubles for £2.
It had been closed for a short while but was supposed to be reopening – until the owners got a quick cash offer.
It just goes to show that even the recession won’t stop greedy developers from moving in on our vital ale houses.
If there’s any chance to reverse this decision – on community grounds maybe – let’s grab it.

I don’t know the place, but it seems a shame. Surely we don’t actually need any more flats?

was a bit of the spit and sawdust variety but had some good nights in there. A great shame, as you say, but sadly it is happening all over. think this is just a culture that is dying out not helped by the govrnment local and national

I had thought the expression “yuppie” died out in the 80s. It seems not.
In response to RedNev, I think we need housing far more than we need “community pubs” that no-one actually wants to visit. The truth is that if these places were adapted to suit the changing demographic of the areas in which they’re situated, they might not be converted into private residences for those people who are changing the demographic.

They mustn’t have greedy developers in London.

It was Paul & Carl North that put the punk gigs on rather than the pub. The pub was too far (approx 600m) out of the square for drinkers to travel to and became uneconomic. A change in the country’s drinking trends will lead to more and more pub closures/redevelopment.
