Ship to stick with John Smiths!
The new landlord of the Ship Inn in Haskayne is interested in stocking guest cask ales but has decided to “stay with John Smiths for a while and see what they have to offer”.
While this will cause dismay throughout the land, Michael has asked for suggestions for cask in the future.
Sensible suggestions please. I’m going to vote for Golden Sands.

John Smiths? Don’t bother Michael. If you only want one simple cask ale that will sell, then I agree with SD – go for a Southport Brewery beer. People will travel to drink a well looked-after Southport beer. I wouldn’t bother driving out to Haskayne if I knew the only pint was John Smith’s, no matter how well it was looked after.

John Smiths Cask is one of the most boring and nondescript beers in the country, and the Smooth is beneath contempt. I really doubt that any drinkers who know their beer would bother stopping there, even if they were passing. If only stocking one real ale, I’d go with Golden Sands too, as local beers are more likely to be tried out by pub-goers, even if just out of curiosity. Golden Sands is so good that it would hook some of them. If going for two real ales, George Wright would be a good choice for the second one, and is fairly local as well.

totally agree! I would drive out there for a George wright or southport brewery but I wouldn’t get out of the shower to piss for a john smiths

[...] Stacey and Paul, run an alehouse called the Smithybridge, which looks a game sort of place. They also proudly boast of their commitment to real ale, which should mean good ale at the Ship rather than the John Smiths we were braced for. [...]
