That’s Entertainment
Two local pubs are hoping to bring in more punters by offering entertainment. Lloyds No 1 has turned the old upstairs smoking bar into a comedy and cabaret space for drinkers.
Meanwhile, the Fox and Goose – under the new ownership of Leo Bar’s Trevor Ford – is opening a comedy club at the pub and hopes to put on live music four nights a week.
We all need entertainment, but I prefer comics in the more refined space of a (traditional) club. Even the best comedian will find it impossible to joke above the apathetic chatter of a pub.
Personally, the best entertainment is at The Volly. Their country sing-a-longs are the best fun in town.

Were clubs so much better for comedy? I remember a female stand-up (possibly Jo Brand, but I can’t be sure) telling how in working men’s clubs the front row often consisted of old men hidden behind their newspapers while the ‘turn’ did their bit. So she decided one day to walk along the front row setting all their papers alight.
It couldn’t be worse than that ~ could it? I wish I’d been there, though.

Why slag something off if you haven’t even been there! The fox’s comedy nights will be great – I can’t wait to go there. Muppet!!!!!

Just exactly where did I slag it off, Squirrel. I wish it all the best and was just making a general observation about comedy in pubs.

We’re definitely going to pay it a visit, I have been to Brendan Riley’s (compere) comedy nights before (at the Freshfield) and they are always extremely good. However, I know these nights cost the organiser around £650… Tickets are £6.50 each.. long way to go before he sees a penny of profit. Good luck to him though, I will definitely support it

The old guy doing roly-polies in the Volly to an accordian accompaniment beats any entertainment any other pub in the world can offer.

What drug dealer, tell me who.. as far as the Comedy nights are concerned the bar is closed whilst the comedians do their thing, we have as many seats as is physically possible to create a relaxed atmosphere. The least amount of people we have had in was 120 and standard of comedy is as good as you would find in any comedy club in the UK.. it has to be because all the comedians are currently working the circuit or TV.
