Herald closed, Blue Anchor closed, Plough fibbing

Two more Southport pubs are shut, with the Herald and Blue Anchor going. There is also now a to-let sign outside the Oast House, which wasn’t open when an SD spy called earlier today.

At this rate will there be any pubs left?

Meanwhile, the beachcomber van pulled into Southport border pub The Plough today after one of our party spotted a sign advertising real ale.

The dreadlocked barman assured us that they didn’t, hadn’t and wouldn’t be selling any cask. What total fibbers. I took my anger out on the bar’s punchbag machine.

  1. What’s the point of having a pub that doesn’t sell real ale? I can understand it if you live in a place like southern Spain (although some decent beer would still be welcome) but in England? People drinking fizz instead of their national drink? No wonder the country is going down the pan.

  2. Probably why the above mentioned pubs are shutting down if you can’t smoke your damned if your going to pay 3 quid for fizzy piss

  3. I hope you didn’t buy a drink there. If it doesn’t sell real ale it also deserves to close!

  4. No. I had a go on the punch machine (result = he-man) and then we went to the Sands

  5. I worked in the Plough for one weekend. Yes, one weekend. the landlord at the time took me down to the cellar to show me where the barrels were. I noticed a load of Union Jacks strewn around the walls and ceiling and made the mistake of asking why… whereby I was shown to his private office where he proudly showed off his decor of choice, mainly Nazi insignia, Union Jack flags, anti-semetic handwritten posters and much, much more… you get the idea anyway. Then I was offered a line of coke – as the papers say – I made my excuses and left. With choice landlords like that I’d imagine it would have been hard for any subsequent landlords to drum up new business.

  6. Crumbs! I’d heard he was a bit, er, patriotic but that is plain weird. Any pub would struggle after having a nutter landlord like that

  7. please adjust misleading headline portland is not closed
