New start for the Arion
The Arion in Ainsdale is making a new start.
The 60s modernist-style pub, which is tucked away on a large, affluent housing estate, is now run by Denise Kern and her partner Roy Vicars after an up-and-down recent history.
Roy is confident he can bring the pub back to its glory days – which coincided with my employment there in the early 90s.
“We want to bring this pub back to the community,” says Roy. “A safe, friendly place to enjoy yourself.”
Roy is a straight-talker but has a softer side. Although an experienced pub man he has also made a living as a singer and is not shy about performing.
“I do everything from James Blunt to Pavarotti,” he says. “I always finish off with Nessun Dorma.”
The pub has four cask pumps. Deuchars is the regular, with three rotating guest beers. There is also a wide range of popular lagers.
A much-delayed refurbishment will take place within six months which will totally separate the bar and the dining area.
There is live sports on the big screen, quiz nights on Mondays, karaoke on Thursdays, pub games on Fridays, and live music on Saturdays. On Sundays there are pub olympics in which participants play for points in games of pool, darts and Nintendo Wii games like baseball, bowling and golf.
