The Crown slips – updated
The Crown pub on Coronation Walk has reopened.
The attractive town centre pub, once one of the smokiest in Britain, had been enjoying a new lease of life as Southport’s only gay ale-house, with lots of thirsty customers making it a second home well into the early hours.
Alas, it appears the old lease holders were more interested in the Thursday night strippers than keeping the books up to date.
I heard that the new leaseholder planned on taking down the rainbow flags and ending the Eurovision discos. But – as of this update – it is back as a gay pub, albeit with a small but not insignificant “straight” following.
Southport has a big gay population, but gay pubs and clubs here never last long despite enjoying popularity. Perhaps its the nature of the ’scene’ that things come and go.

Its such a shame its closed down. It can work out, and it has worked out before. Yes, there is a large gay population here, but sadley it seems the very ones who complain about the lack of somewhere to go, are the very ones who dont support the places.
Used to frequent the Crown quite a lot, but found too many pill poppers, popper-sniffers, and line takers. not my thing atall. it’s not ‘part of the gay scene’, stroll down west st. on any night of the week, its part of every scene.

I frequent this place now it has re-opened and think the new owners are really putting the effort in they want to try to cater for their customers needs and really focus on them enjoying themselves, I now work for them and the plans they have are amazing. The gay community of Southport should embrace this and show their support, the owners really do have their best interests at heart, I do not think they will go down without a fight ! watch this space!!

southport is a fantastic place and the crown now has a fantastic bar with efficient and friendly bar staff – yes it does not cater to all – especially with no real ales – but it is a niche market pub where people go to be entertained !
Regular drag cabaret every thursday friday saturday and sunday makes this a unique venue for merseyside…………
I recommend you try the fresh approach being served here by the new management team.
weekends are a hoot !!!!
If you don’t try you will be missing out – i hear on the grapevine a big promotion with the local radio station dune fm is happening real soon with a big prize

Well, i have lived here in Southport since 1997 and seen bars and clubs open and close, but i do think the new look Crown is very good. And now just opened last Saturday a new gay friendly club Superstar Boodwar round the corner from the crown. It’s actually quite nice but was very busy.

What a waste of time Synergy is. Only 12 people turned up at their opening in blackpool last saturday on Pride night. There are too many gay bars in blackpool already. No one needs amateurs coming along who can’t host a bar properly. I hear they went down the pan in scotland and came here to try the same thing.

I can confirm that no such attack took place – the only incident was the removal of a domestic dispute – which resulted in some friends of the people being asked to leave – the crown is proud to op-erate a safe and controlled venue using licensed door staff – it is unfortunate that people get upset when asked to leave – we have certainly not barred any persons from the venue relating to this incident – infact the ejected people were invited to come back when they had resolved their dispute – the crown has ejected less than six people in six months – not too bad by my reckoning – and also may we add no police complaint has been filed to date. The benefit of cctv allows us to confirm the nature of incidents using digital imaging from multi cameras.

I know all of the Synergy owners and investors and there is not a nicer group of people you could wish to know.
If you haven’t got anything better to do with your time than slag people off then you need to get a life.
Both of the current Synergy venues are fabulous and will only become better in time.

It does seem strange that people are either really pro or against Synergy.
My dealings have always found them pretty even-handed, but that’s been limited to a couple of friendly conversations.
I suppose the price of success is that you are under a lot more scrutiny than, say, an average back street boozer.

was at the crown bar earlier in the week, its a great place to go and hang out. All the staff were really friendly and the owners made me and the rest of my party feel really welcome.
There was a great atmosphere when i was there and from talking to others in the bar it seems that this is always the case. There was a variety of entertainment and music to suit all tastes (gay or straight). i had a brilliant night, fun and relaxing.
There is a great area at the back, with trendy garden furniture, swings and lots of flowers which adds a homely feel, and from talking to the staff it sounds like inside was just about to receive a face lift.
To sum it up, we all had a great time and will definitely be back soon.
We wish Glenn and all the team all the best for the future.

THE CROWN HAS FALLEN! The southport gay pub has lost its edge and alot of customers. It has removed its popular drag queen star, rarely has adequate stock, half the time you cant even get a pint of fosters or a house vodka etc. The staff look unhappy and the owners dont seem to care. I encourage all who read this not to drink in this unpleasant venue as I think its a waste of time and money. A much better night can be had in other venues around the town.

I moved to Southport at the start of September, I’m now a regular at The Crown, and I’ve always been highly impressed with the staff and owners. I go with a group of people and we all find the venue to be comfortable and welcoming. There’s always an upbeat and fun atmosphere, and the service never fails to please. Even the customers are fantastic! The Crown basically has it all, and will only improve in the future.
I don’t know them personally, but I wish the owners and staff the very best and congratulate them on maintaining a wonderful venue.

The crown is going down the pan. To be honest , i beleive that the only way to stop this once grand bar failing any more and destoying the people of southports view of the crown, would be to shut the venue and allow someone else make it a success as it is now clear that the owners have no idea what is needed to make a bar work nevermind make it a success ! yes the crown used to be a good bar but it has been ruined. when glenn anderson was running it with wendy nugent it was boss but then wendy brings in her lesbian lover tamara priestman and all hell broke lose. tamara saw that glenn mike dwayne and others left the real reasons not known as it seems everyone has been told a different story but we all know that it is tamara who’s at the bottom of it all.
then the fabulous roxy and kitt go so what is left absolutely nothing. my mate was accused of things and barred by wendy even thouigh she had no solid proof and just went on what some jealous people were saying.
who wants to go in there now, saddos. one mate who inadvertently went in there said the place has no customers, decorated in very bad taste, it was grubby and the toilets, say no more. if that is how the bar is presented to joe public who knows what lurks behind the scenes!!! you’ll find me and my mates in other bars around town where we have a brill time and not paying over the odds for drink. the crown give it a miss, not run by locals so think they need to get the next stagecoach out of town.

At the end of the day, your bitter and twisted rantings have maybe caused 2 seconds harm to Keith and the owners. No more. You are not that important. I am a regular in both the crown and victoria and have always found everyone to be warm friendly and welcoming. the girls and kieth are doing a great job in wat is one of the biggest finacial crisis this country has seen since the 80’s. in my opinion they are doing a great job.
the problem with southport is that they are not willing to suppor their own gay bars and never have eg.. tfg’s, amsterdam bar, churchills, roberta lee’s etc. the list is endless, so instead of winging about the southport scene we should be getting out to support it!
on another important note i would like to personally thank all the staff in both pubs for always making my time in both pubs enjoyable

We have just come home from a very pleasent evening in the Victoria.
The barmaid was welcoming and very polite, the service was excellent.
The place looks so much better with out those awful partitions, it is open and airy.
I am born and breed in Southport and have to say it was the first time in my life that I have ever had a drink in the victoria on a cold wet windy night, to find the place warm and welcoming. Take it finally managed to get the heating system working correctly.
For those of you who are busy slagging people off and being extremely rude about staff obviously were not drinking in the same bar as me.
As for the gutless wonder who starts dragging peoples children into the public forum, you need to get a life.
Wake up Southport, we need to get behind our bars and support them or lose them.

As for having a ‘good education’ and being able to spell ‘just fine’, perhaps all that anger is affecting you to the point where you’ve had a minor emotional episode and can’t quite operate the old keyboard as you used to? Or maybe you are stabbing at those keys with such explosions of rage, you’ve lost several of your acrylics? Either way, it’s ‘know it all’, not ‘no it all’.

The Crown is still open. The Victoria is still open. People are getting on quite happily with their lives. Can you please let me know if you know the whereabouts of the last owner Miss Wendy Nugent (lease holder) of the crown .
Due to investing money into the crown which as not been paid back . this was invested when the crown was first reopened last year in March .
Have you seen several sets of leather couches and chairs which i also brought .

me and my better half used to frequent the crown yet, noticed its empty. Went past the other day to be told its reopening march, as a gay bar again. yes, there are alot of us in sunny southport but, only want a good nite out, good atmosphere, entertainment etc. Can the fun loving gay community look forward to a good nite in southport again?

How can you clarify a fact which is wrong !
The Crown lease holder is Wendy Nugent.
PERIOD – see Sefton Council Website – we are not being fooled.
Good luck to the new tenants – you are right it is a great gay venue – but when people are paid by Wendy Nugent – then all the open armed welcoming back will take place.
Meanwhile with Duane, Tony and others being so out of pocket while Ms Nugent pretends they dont exist – we wont be visiting.
Please check the facts before posting on peoples behalf – you are a good guy – we all know you – but there are avery hurt people out there.
As for real ale – it is true it one cask could be offered – if open seven days a week – but with purely weekend trade – i think it might taste stale – so leave it out of the menu until the venue can support such an offering (served well).

It’s a real shame that everything positive that is being created at present is still subject to the gossip and public discussion of peoples past financial issues in relation to the Crown of last year.
The issues you seem to rant about are of no concern of mine or the people who wish to drink in The Crown Today, It is past and has no relevence to the new owners or myself or Chris who together are making the Crown A Safe, Positive Fun Place To be.
Names On Websites, Who owes Who What has nothing to Do With The New Owners Or Indeed anything to do with The Current Crown’s Running.
This Is a private matter which you have made public in a most awful way.
I Think The Past Should stay where it is and fair enough there may still be financial issues surrounding business from the Crown of last year but that has nothing to do with us.
We wont try to ‘convince’ people to return to us, if you want to see how positive, safe and friendly your new gay venue is then simply come on down and see for yourself.
The negative bitter attitiude of the past has nothing to do with any aspect of the Crown today and come and enjoy yourself!

We Say again – Wendy nugent owns the Crown – there are no new owners – which part can you not understand – the council website will confirm this.
Sorry Toby but you are being advised wrongly – the furniture in the crown is from the victoria along with Tams sound system as you pictures show on facebook – are we silly – we think not.
Duane is broke because of ms Nugent – other people are really suffering too – i have seen with my own eyes – the havoc she is causing still .
I am not being fed information by anyone nor am i meaning to slate of the new management of the crown – but this has got to stop – the lies are intolerable.
All the people who post on here were once really good friends or colleagues or staff of Wendy and Glenn – Wendy’s lies have caused so much hurt – your intervention on their behalf is insulting .
I have kept quiet til now on the hope that it might get better – but obviously not. I have seen more than most the damage caused to so many – VERY CLOSE FRIENDS – from Glenn and mike to Andy and Andre and Duane and Mark and Tony Taylor the staff and myself – even you were hurt at one point.
Life goes on – but it takes a lot longer to get on with it when you still have to carry the burden of debt on your shoulders.
This is a tissue of lies – i am not owed money or anything but people have stood by me despite having nothing themselves after Wendy’s and Tam’s actions and i feel they need defended.

Well can i just congradulate the new owners of the crown on doing something many people have tried… getting the government to change the law! According to the law the venue license holder has direct responsibility for the venue and seen as Wendy is still the License Holder means she has FULL CONTROL of the premises…. But obviously this is not the case, I mean who am i to dispute the word of Bubbles de Vile!
I have kept quiet throughout all of this but people are becoming too much Toby stop trying to fix something that can’t be fixed… and like you PJay is allowed to say what he wishes like anybody else is… Thankfully we do have freedom of speech in this country (much the shame for some people in this forum)

The Dj Is Chris Jackson (CJ) Who has worked with the new owners for many years. Karaoke always works as do drag artistes in a gay venue, it’s what people expect to start with although we have other events planned.
I know exactly how and where Bubbles came about and yes my job was let go I made the choice of looking after my mother who was sick and taking her to ormskirk on a day where I should have been working at the victoria which resulted in me loosing my job, a tad harsh maybe but you get over it. Unlike others I don’t do jumping on the band wagon or taking sides or backstabbing, Roxy thought the grass was greener remember she aint a victim only of her own foolish choice.
I understand implicitly how much you all hurt from whats happened and is happening to you as a result of your on-going feud. But honestly PJ resorting to petty remarks about the wig is pathetic.
Wendy and Tam have nothing to do with the crown other than Wendy’s Name still on that damn web site which we are looking in to rectifying. Wendy is the 1st to admit that the brewery took the premises back and sought Charlie and Lynn as the new owners.
I however remain the positive one as ever who believes in making the place as great as it can be for the GBLT population of Southport and surrounding areas not as in the past but as Charlie And Lynn want it to be as I am employed by them and have my work cut out within the PR side of the venue!
You lot arent helping, which I didnt expect you too and I am NOT a spokesperson for anyone other than my new employers I have had nothing to do with the Crown since not long after you all left and have been working also as i still am doing at the Coronation Pub aswell as the crown my loyalties are with Charlie and Lynn as they are the only thing positive about the place at the moment, that and Chris, myself and the new acts who genuinly want to help the venue, without a hidden agenda.
Your collective issue is with Wendy and Tam NOT with The Crown Now or Charlie or Lynn or the New Team.
I personally think this whole Southport Drinker slanging match between you all is sad and a bit beneath you all really yes court cases are extreamly expensive but if there was a viable case as you say any lawyer would happilly take it on board for a cut of the settlement surely?

Of course you are all entitled to your opinion, my nose was never in I’m merely defending myself and the interests of the crown and will continue to do so as long as I am employed by Charlie And Lynn as they are putting their all into the Venue and deserve all the help going.
Propoganda!? The correct word is Promotion and although your all writting about a Crown that no longer exists I’m writting about one which does and is anti-negativity.
Feel free to post what you want a sI know you will as for us at the Crown were having a fabulous time and every day we are open we are welcoming back faces old and new who just want to come to party and not be involved in matters which should have remained private where possible (their words).

It is Fantastic news that the Crown is re-open – It is exactly what southport needs and is hugely welcomed – infact we would all love to be there having a party with you all and helping get it back to where it was – this is just a question of ownership.
If it is still owned by Wendy – as would appear on an official government website – then we just want the lie to stop and Wendy to pay her way.
if it is Owned by charlie and Lynn – then there will be no more defending of our position in a public forum reference the Crown – that can go onto the Victoria where Wendy and Tam are in Residence.
so for the avoidance of doubt i would like to confirm that a lawyer has been instructed to discover the truth behind the ownership situation – and an answer will be drawn through court if necessary – although it is hoped the truth willl emerge very quickly.
We will make our findings available through this site – in order to settle this dispute.
You see the problem comes if Wendy sold up – when who owns the Crown is in dispute ( people paid for involvement in the Crown and Victoria and just because Miss nugent said they weren’t involved does not make it the TRUTH – besides that all the furniture has disappeared and that belongs solely to Tony Taylor – he has the receipts for it. )
Toby you are liked and we truly wish you well in your role – we know you are working very hard. So keep up the good work – cos either way we want the Crown to be running well.
We will not post post again until we resolve this legal ownership position – unless we are forced to by an attack on us again through this site.

It seems that many people on here have used this forum for many things, chasing debt, slagging people off, slander etc.
Now then lets clarify some things.

The P.A. System in The Crown is mine it belongs to My Company as is the lighting system.
The New Owners have been offered a lease of 5 years. instead of referring to a councils website which obviously has not been updated since our official opening on 6th March try contacting the Brewery for more accurate information.
It never ceases to amaze me what utter rubbish appears on this site so here are some home truths.
1. Wendy is at The Victoria Pub in Southport if she owes you money why not pop your head in and talk to her about it.
2. If indeed these people are owed money then surely there would be relevant paperwork and therefore a watertight case to take to a magistrate and agree on a payment structure. If no such paperwork exists then that is a very naive way to do business.
3. PJ yes its hilarious that our names are similar and it was pointed out to me on the opening night. it is however completely irrelevant to anything
4. Toby was recruited by me as he expressed an interest in helping rebuild the crown and has now been given the responsibilty of PR he is solely looking after the interest of The Crown NOT defending Wendy or Tam
5. Any venue which utilises as many as 16 entertainment/PR staff is indeed going to be a great night out. However unless the customers are spending copious amounts of money behind the bar it is not financially viable as far as i can see this was a fundemental flaw in the way The Crown was run previously.
6. Myself Charlie & Lynne are at the crown Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday anyone who would like to come and see for themselves what we have done or indeed have a chat about things which they are wondering about can feel free to do so.
7. The format of the bars entertainment schedule was put in place by me using a tried and tested method used in many gay venues up and down the country. It is no surprise to me that it used to be the same as it is the same in many similar venues.
8. By writing your comments on here you are creating curiosity surrounding the venue which is indeed helping us to build a customer base. The vast majority of people who have come in once, have returned which is a good indicator considering this is only our third week of business – Thank you
9. On a personal note note one thing i detest is cowardice if you are going to say things about any of us including Toby then please have the bottle to come and say it to our faces

The business was not failing – it was supporting a massive profile whilst expanding – Tam’s involvement ended our friendships as she took control of peoples shares with Wendy’s support …. as you can see the victoria is still there .
And in the meantime we will await response from our lawyer for an explanation as to why Ms Nugent is still listed .

Me and a few friends had an amazing time over the weekend on the Crown and would like to say keep up the good work guys, got to disagree about Maloney’s though, fair enough its filled on a weekend and is a great meeting place but if the same songs, being charged loads for drinks and being crammed in like sardines is your idea of a great night then you obviously have a very limited view on what constitutes as a great night.
I would’nt class Malonys as particullary welcoming either the bar staff are great and entertaining but the few times ive been in over the years (only with friends never out of choice) i have found that i feel like a sheep in a flock of testosterone filled rams ‘out to impress’. Its a meat market with a great cocktail bar attatched at best.

i have been and they are doing a great job in turning the pub round the new resident is very accommodating plays exactly what you want and has a very big karaoke selection. the book is about 3 inches thick.
As for the new drags well they have fitted in wonderfully and i had an amazing night in there on saturday.
The New Owners Charlie and Lynne are very nice too.

I went down for the Karaoke night there it was a very enjoyable evening out i didnt sing or anything as i’m not very good. However the DJ sung a few songs including a very good version of The Darkness. Bravo.
All the negative rubbish is in the past the new guys have got it dead right a great night to be had by all in The Crown pub.
p.s. i might even try a song next time lol

It was confirmed today that the Premises license holder was transferred with immediate effect to Lynne UPJOHN.
The Crown is under new Ownership – and we would like to take the chance to congratulate Charlie and Lynn on their new venture .
Good Luck with the old place. Toby is a good person to help promote your venue .
It is however noted that lies were told in relation to the leaseholders not being Wendy Nugent as the date of transfer for the premises was YESTERDAY ( 02.04.09 )
So there was a sublease in place between at least the brewery and miss Nugent which the the new lease holders were legally obliged to be told about under the data protection act – and would of course also account for the Victoria’s furniture being in the Crown etc….
We promised our response to you …. you can judge for yourselves Miss Nugents’ involvement with the Crown until yesterday – we of course hold our view which we published before.
We bid a fond farewell to the Crown and it’s wonderful customers and memories.
Lynn and Charlie you have our full support – Success to you – please take the Crown back to the great pub it was under SYNERGY.
Maybe one day we will be able to come and drink there together ans see it returned to it’s former glory.
On a last note on this site we thought we would tell you about the name SYNERGY – it was chosen by Wendy Nugent as it was one of her life principles – Working together to achieve great things – what we didn’t realise at the time was – THe GREAT THING was going to be a ROW.

sorry for the interuption. to clarify the licence issues.
a. the sefton register has not been updated in nearly 12 months. new dps’,premises licence and personal licence holders during this time have not been put on the system.
b. the main way to find out who the licensee is, is to go to the licencing dept of sefton council environmental protection dept at bootle town hall, balliol rd, bootle.
c. the issue of who i the licensee is complicated. to get full clarification see the 2003 licencing act(updated 2005).
d. in periods of transition from old to new licences, there are provisions for tempary transfers, in cases such as this even a daily updated licence database from any council, woul not change their information till the hearings for full transfer were heard and granted. once again see the licencing act.
e. different councils use these laws to their own slightly different interprutations as per scope of the act, so dont always assume that all councils will dealt with the same situations in the same way.

But during the time of transfer whikle the case is being heard – the premises license holder in situ remains the RESPONSIBLE PERSON who allows the venue to trade in His / HER name.

no probs, just thought it would be mo preferencial to put some legitimate information on situations in general to do with the industry. i won’t comment on the situation being discussed by yourself and others on this forum as i am not involved in this issue. as all of us on here are aware, it is unfair and foolish to get involved on situations we know nothing about. therefore i thought it would be appropriate to put forward legitimate information for people to reference but as the matter above is in lawyers hands, i will be making no further comments on this forum. this is a legal issue that would make it impossible for me to do so anyway.

The Crown Is a lovely place sadly the owners are arses I went in on the 20th June and got chucked out on the basis “the owners don`t want you here” so called wanting to attack a lad there (what a joke). I wouldn`t mind if I did say that lol. I`m a very passive person and have never hurt a fly, nor have I been so badly treated as I was in the Crown

It’s always intresting to see feedback on The Crown and to see what people have to say about the place. Despite it’s past under previous owners The Crown continues to grow from strength to strength, the feedback we have from the vast majority of our customers is that they enjoy the friendly relaxed and safe atmosphere we offer.
Unfortunately that means sometimes we do have to ask people to leave as after a few drinks some peoples behaviour deteriorates so with the safety and comfort of the rest of our customers in mind we have to take action. Such actions are not meant to alienate people but just allow the majority of our customers to feel safe.
As for “anonymous” above I have no knowledge of the incident and dont want to get in to a debate about it but, I am sure they will be welcome at The Crown again. If you Mr or Ms Anonymous have any specific complaints etc then please direct them to me or info@gaygrown.com or indeed come in and speak to one of the owners.
Moving forward The Crown will continue to be a Gay bar, we welcome everyone at The Crown regardless of age, sex, colour, sexual orientation etc etc as long as they are they respect the other customers and their right to a safe and comfortable environment as we do.
If you haven’t been along yet to The Crown then why not pop in and see whats on offer, we’ve always got great offers on and a fun entertainments program and we’re always open until late so come and party with us.
