Coach & Horses closed

As another Maghull pub has fallen foul of its neighbours.

The Coach and Horses on Liverpool Road North – once a great Greenhalls pub, especially when yours truly worked behind the bar there – has been boarded up after the licensee vanished following a friendly chat with the local police.

Neighbours have been complaining to police recently about late night noise and violent incidents in and around the premises. The local head of police told the landlady to sort out problems or get out of town.

There seems to be a trend in Maghull now where residents living close to pubs are banding together to try and close any establishment with late night noise.

Nearby pub, The Everest also  almost lost its licence because of similar complaints while The Valentine in Aintree Village was closed by the police last year.

The Valentine, under a new name The Village Inn, has now re-opened. The licensee is clearly trying to work hard with his neighbours.

“People are starting to use the new Licensing Act (which ironically brought in 24-hour drinking) to force licensee and their customers to treat local residents with respect,” said Maghull councillor Tony Robertson.

“If they cannot see that then they are riding for a big fall in my view. Most local pus are surrounded by residential property. They have to think hard how they run their business in a way that their neighbours will accept.  If they don’t, those same neighbours will use the law, the police and councillors to have action brought against the pub.”
