The Southport Drinker
The best pubs in Southport and district plus news and views from beer land

Southport, Lancs

A few people have written to me, requesting information about the Southport Brewery. I’ve posted a story I wrote for Highlife magazine here.

Meanwhile, Happy Lancashire Day. I popped into the Guest House to see if anyone was observing, only to be delighted to see all the barstaff wearing traditional Lancashire dress. There was plenty of local beer on offer, too, including Southport Brewery beers and Moorhouse’s excellent Lancashire Lass.

I was going to stay for the dancing and scoffing but made a sharp exit just as disgraced former Sefton mayor John Walker entered the bar arena with a spring in his step and a thirst for real ale.

  1. How do I contact Southport Drinker direct without having to find blogs relating to issues I wish to raise? I contacted Paul Bardsley last Monday about the Phoenix wanting to stock their beers. To date Mark Evans, the manager, has heard nothing. I want Southport beers in as many pubs as possible and hope this information will be relayed to him.

  2. Jmensa, you can email me at

I think Paul Bardsley is at that agonising stage about whether he should expand or not. He’s just breaking even at the moment, everyone likes his beers but if he wants to start making good profits he has to start making more beer and taking them further afield that means big premises and more staff. If I was him I’d go for it, but it’s not my livlihood/career on the line
